These are four of my current students. They did a wonderful class project about traditional Korean instruments.
Their English nicknames are (from left to right) Joy, Jumin (ok, hers isn't English), Sally and Dianne.
Joy is holding her traditional drum and the instrument on the table is Dianne's kayageum. Check out my post about kayagaeum fusion for more on this....

I think the name may have to do with the biblical story of Jacob and Esau. Jacob, the younger brother, stole his older brother's birthright by tricking his father into thinking he was Esau. Jacob received his father's blessing - and thus his inheritance. That' why the fathers of the Jewish people are Abraham Isaac and Jacob, not Abraham Isaac and Esau as they should have been. Years later, the brothers do reconcile, but it is a pretty strong story of brotherly rivalry.
