I thought this word meant "clothes." Apparently, in New Zealand, it means swimsuit. Or so I found out when talking to two young NZer girls in the locker room of a community center pool. It was another example of even Anglophones not always understanding one another.
I was fortunate to meet these girls though; I'd gone to the Suwon Youth Cultural Center because I'd been told there was a public pool there. I wasn't sure how I'd ask for information about the cost, hours, etc. So, I started off with a lot of body language when "talking" to staff in the building (picture miming changing in and out of a swimsuit or doing the crawl). Once in the locker room, though, I heard English! woo hoo!
