A few surprises:
One of my recent students told me she'd lived on a kibbutz several years ago. I was very surprised and asked her why. She said it was an inexpensive way to go see the MidEast.
When I mentioned being Jewish to my boss, she said she thought there was a Jewish "monk" in Seoul. I'm pretty sure she didn't mean someone like Bernie Glassman (a Zen Buddhist with a temple in NY). Rather, I think she just doesn't know the word "rabbi."
One of my students downloaded a video from the Internet that showed a couple of cartoonish Jewish grocers doing a song and dance about kosher foods for sale. He (my student) didn't know what it was about. It was extremely funny to see it out of context like that. If I have time, I want to write the words and show my class.
