It's true what I'd heard--that teachers are given more respect here than in the West. Or, I should say, it's been true in my own limited experience so far.
The office assistant at work shows up in class bringing me coffee although I haven't asked for any. At first I asked him why he did this, and he just said it was because I'm the teacher.(Unfortunately, it's yucky coffee in a can, but the thought is there.)
My students don't just say thanks, they say things like "Your lessons are precious to us!" Then they bring me home made kim chee.
Occasionally this can go to silly extremes. One time, a student said she'd like to take advantage of my wisdom and then asked me for medical advice! I told her that although I have doctors in my family, I don't even play one on tv myself.
