Shopping--old style and modern

One thing I've noticed about shopping here is that everything's all mixed up together in ways it wouldn't be at home. For instance, in the little side street markets there are vendors selling jeans and perfume next to vendors selling fresh (or even live) fish. I know it's my vegetarian sensibility at work here again, but to me the smell of fresh fish isn't really conducive to trying on clothes.

The huge "marts" are the same way but on a much bigger scale. These are like supermarkets and departments stores and WalMart all rolled into one. Yesterday I went to a place called Home Plus with one my students and her family. The food section featured salespeople shouting about the high quality of their meat or fish, etc. There was a woman holding up live crabs for inspection. The other side of the same floor (which was huge) featured young women dressed up like marching band members bowing at the customers and trying to call everyone's attention to the cosmetics for sale. On other floors of the same store I bought a coat rack and a watch. Not unusual items, per se, but you probably wouldn't find them in the same retail establishment as live seafood back in the U.S.
