Generalizing and being pleasantly surprised

It's really easy for foreigners to fall into the rut of talking about what we don't like about Koreans (as I mentioned), and to experience each slight as indicative of the whole country. Even though it can be cathartic to complain to one another, I try not to stay in that frame of mind too long, not just because it doesn't seem fair to Koreans, but it makes my own experience here less fun.

Anyway, I had a "bad Korea moment" a couple of days ago when a bus driver slapped me to get my attention and ask where I was going. Not slapped in painful way or in the face, but even so....
Granted, he (correctly assumed) that I didn't speak Korean and so wouldn't have understood if he'd said "Excuse me, miss, where are you going?" But I still starting thinking "Korean men are so rude!...."

But then yesterday I was on the bus to Seoul and it was standing room only. I had my backpack because I was going hiking. A Korean man sitting by me offered to hold my backpack in his lap, which I thought was very kind. And it reminded me not to take the bus driver as typical of all Korean men.
