One thing I insisted on when I negotiated my new contract with the university was bigger housing.
So, now I'm living in a loft in a 15-floor "officetel" building (i.e., businesses on the first floor, housing on the others). It's so much better than my old place! I'm hoping being here will make my upcoming teaching year less stressful.
Some things I have in my new place that I didn't have in my old one:
A real shower with a closing door (not just a detachable hose on the bathroom wall)!
Enough room for more furniture than a twin bed and a desk.
A view from the 12th floor (as opposed to looking out at the alley from the first floor)
Friends in the building (other expat teachers, several who also work at Ajou U).
On the street level, there's a bank, a 24-hour convenience store, and a Dunkin' Donuts. DD is a happening place for people to hang out, including adults. It's a nice break from the student ghetto where I was before.
I've been going on walks around the Hwaseong Fortress wall (I blogged about it in April) with two new friends--Jayne (from Saskatchewan, Canada) and Carol (from England) and Ziggy (Jayne's dog). Here's a picture of Jayne and Ziggy.
