The Korean language is so focused on status and the relationship between the speakers that there are even two completely different words for "rice" depending on who you're talking to.
For example, kids are taught to use the formal version when addressing their elders, but I assume the parents and grandparents use the informal version when talking to the kids.
I haven't actually seen this in action, but so I've been told by reliable sources (native speakers).
