I saw this being performed when I took my cat Buddy to the vet yesterday. (Buddy has a tracheal infection, which I blame on the yellow dust here).
The dog, of course, didn't like having needles stuck in its legs. But it was small enough that its owner was able to hold it in her arms and keep it calm anyway.
Back home, anybody who took their pet for acupuncture would almost certainly be mocked as a New Ager with too much money. Pet health care, like people health care, seems to be a lot more affordable here than in the US though. (At least, based on my limited experience.)
