Someone in the office made little bilingual index cards for me to use when I can't communicate otherwise. One says "I'm a vegetarian". I tried it for the first time tonight and it worked beautifully.
It felt a little odd to use something like that to communicate though, and I was reminded of the people in the NYC subways who hand out cards saying they're deaf and asking for donations. Of course, I was ordering a meal, not asking for some change. But it still felt weird.
